Resources
Career Services
So, maybe you’ve graduated or you’re
about to graduate and you’re thinking to yourself:“What
the heck am I going to do with my life?” That’s
okay. Don’t panic. We’ve got some lovely resources
for you to get you started, but if you’re really confused,
just shoot us an email. It’s not like we’re working
or anything…:
a. Before you graduate (or afterwards- it’s never too
late), call or visit the Career Services office at your college.
Often colleges and universities have excellent resources for
graduating students available on their website as well, like
where to look for graduate school programs, fellowship information,
and job/career fairs.
Also, most schools have career counselors
available to sit down with you to discuss your options. Do
this first, it has the potential to be a one-stop shop.
b. Even higher ed? If your school doesn’t have many
resources for you or you just want more, there are a variety
of websites to choose from. These databases are also searchable
by program and region.
Some general databases:
c. From school to work? Perhaps graduate
school isn’t right for you or your career track doesn’t
require it? Idealist.org has a great database for non-profit
job searches, career fair location listings, information on
internships, fellowships and other career-related resources
on their Career
Services webpage.
Still not finding what you're looking for? Take a look at
this listing of social
change careers from Raise Your Voice: Student Action for
Change. This page also contains links to fellowships, jobs,
internships and post-graduate alternatives.
It’s a grand dream….
it take’s ambition, drive, a good support system, a
red meat- free diet and a box of Kleenex. Now, once you’ve
got all that ready and on stand-by, you should go to the Foundation
Center’s website and have a look at their how-to guide
on Establishing
a Non-profit Organization. It’s completely free!
Also, Idealist.org has some info on How
to Start a Foundation. This should be enough to get your
mental wheels turning…and you might want to check out
the graduate programs page as well.
If you’re terribly serious about having a career in
the non-profit sector, this is the page for you. There are
tons of social justice/service-related careers out there and
