Student Voice Action Team

Student voice and leadership is critical to an effective Bonner Program as well as other on-campus community involvement opportunities. You may be most interested in moving these issues forward if you are from a new program or an established program with great examples of student leadership to share with others. Focusing on student voice, this group of Congress Reps is working onways for all Congress Reps to assess the strength of student voice within the service programs on their respective campuses. These Congress Reps are strengthening the presence of student voice and leadership through key Bonner components (i.e., community fund, recruiting new Bonners, and Advisory Council to the program).

Student Statement

At the Bonner Congress Meeting, this Student Voice team had the opportunity to experience the diversity of Bonner programs within their group firsthand, converse with President Wayne Meisel to answer basic questions about the Bonner Foundation, and to discuss good practices on campus in relationship to a stronger Student Voice in the Bonner Program. Roughly, group discussion centered around the following topics:

  • How can we make sure everyone has access to basic resources about the Bonner Foundation, get everyone connected?
    • We need increased communications between Bonner schools to share good practices when it comes to Student Voice on campus
    • Perhaps blogging could help this effort…
    • A newsletter or use of the yahoo listserv
  • Forming committees is a good start to providing student voice within your Bonner Program
    • One school even reported on a committee that is processing the selection of their new Bonner Coordinator.
    • Many of the representatives valued the time they had at the Congress Meeting to talk, reflect, discuss and share their experiences with the Bonner Program because these conversations help lead to analysis of policies and better implementation. They noted that even creating spaces and time for this type of discussion in their own Bonner Programs back at their school could be an effective tool to improving Student Voice in the Bonner Program.

What Happens Next?
We’re hoping to update you on the short term and long term goals of this Action Team soon. For now, if you’d like to share more about your experience on the Student Voice Team and have any comments about how you’re implementing what you learned at the Congress Meeting on your campus, please e-mail Erin Raffety, Co-Coordinator for the Bonner Congress.
