Frequently Asked Questions
If a student wants to participate
in the AmeriCorps program but does not have loans, can their
loan reduction money go towards their graduate school tuition?
Yes.
I have at least one student
who is close to finishing up his service hours. Do the education
award packets come from the Corporation for National &
Community Service or am I supposed to put something together
as a site supervisor?
The member must fill out the AmeriCorps
Exit Form (located in the "Bonner Service Workbook") and send
it in along with their last timesheet. Once all required
paperwork has been completed and entered into the Corporation
for National & Community Service's database by the Bonner
staff, the Corporation will send a voucher directly to the
member's permanent address noted on the exit form. Student
have seven years to use their Education Award from the date
that they exit from their AmeriCorps term.
What if a member loses the voucher
or never received one after being exited?
It's best to first check with the Bonner
AmeriCorps Staff to ensure all paperwork was complete and
to verify the Social Security number and the permanent address
of the member. Once this is done, and information was entered
correctly, it is best to contact the Corporation for National
and Community Service who deals with any processing of the
voucher, after it has been awarded to an AmeriCorps member.
They can be reached by phone at 1-888-507-5962 or by email
at edawardvoucher@cns.gov.
Must the Ed Award be used all
at once?
No. It is completely up to the member as
to how the Ed Award is used. If it is used in increments we
recommend the member visit www.americorps.org
and follow links to Alumni information. There, the member
will be allowed to sign up for a login to view their account
and how much was processed. We recommend that members
keep copies of everything. The Ed Award is taxable in the
year it was used.
