Need help understanding "New > Article" behaviour

I'm going to need to understand a little better where articles show up and how they differ from the other types of entries.
When saving an article just now, the admin system took me back to the actual site home page in the "body" of the admin screen. These seems strange to me.
I also cannot find the article after I saved it.
