Introduction :
Background
The initial impetus for creating a database system for tracking and reporting for the Bonner program came when we learned that few of our campuses had their own systems in place.
When we examined the potential for a common system for all the Bonner programs, several benefits came to mind:
- electronic databases offers more efficient means for managing large amounts of data;
- easier means of implementing common reporting forms, especially for Foundation reporting;
- standardizing reporting forms and processes would ease challenges of staff turnover on campuses and at the Foundation
We initially developed a desktop database solution that we demonstrated at the 1999 Summer Leadership Institute at the Lawrenceville School. But, just about that time, we realized that the reporting requirements for the AmeriCorps Education Awards would require that we aggregate hour and service activity reports for hundreds of Bonner members. So we decided that our desktop approach needed to be scraped in favor of a web-based reporting system.
The 1.0 version of the Bonner Web-Based Reporting System dealt exclusively with the AmeriCorps reporting requirements. It allowed entry for cumulative service and training hours, as well as end-of-semester service activity accomplishments.
We were encouraged enough by how this worked that we began the process of expanding the functions to include those we had originally planned. The 2.0 version included more detailed profiles of students, service opportunities, projects, agencies, and training & enrichment events. It also included Community Learning Agreement forms and daily service hour logs. However, while this version was a major step forward, it was still a work in progress, with several key sections either incomplete or still missing.
The 2.9 version is being completed now. In addition to a more fully realized set of features, it also has some interface enhancements that should make using the system easier and more intuitive. The most significant new feature is a series of administrative reporting functions specifically for the Bonner Scholars Program.
We will continue to seek user feedback as we refine this system. We are already planning a major upgrade for Summer 2006 which will include a new interface. Click here for a preview of the draft re-design for BWBRS 3.0.
