2018 Social Action Course Development Workshop

a special track of the 2018 Summer Leadership Institute

We are offering a special day and a half workshop track on developing courses with a social action focus as part of the 2018 Bonner Summer Leadership Institute (SLI).  SLI is the largest annual event for the Bonner Network, bringing together 300+ students, administrators, faculty, and national organization partners for three days of workshops, discussions, and networking.

This year's Summer Leadership Institute is being hosted by Wagner College's Center for Leadership and Engagement.  The CLCE is guided by the Wagner Plan for the Practical Liberal Arts and builds upon Wagner’s long-standing tradition of academic excellence and dedication to civic engagement.

The day and a half social action course development track will give participants an opportunity to understand social action training and time to draft a syllabus for a course to be taught in the 2018-19 academic year.  Scott Myers-Lipton, professor of sociology at San Jose State University, will lead this track.  Scott has taught his social action course for more than a decade and recently published Change! A Student Guide to Social Action.

"This is the first practical social change text devoted to students working in an academic environment. While there are many books about community organizing and social change, there are no college texts focusing on how to provide real-world experience with academic content taking into consideration the flow of the academic term. CHANGE! A Student Guide to Social Action is written specifically for faculty and staff to use with college students with the goal of helping students bring about the change they believe is necessary to make our community a better place to live."

The Bonner Foundation has partnered with Scott to work with schools in and outside of our network.  Scott led a two-part introduction to social action at the 2017 Bonner Summer Leadership Institute and as a pre-conference for our Fall 2017 Bonner Directors Meeting He also led several introductory webinars, which you can view here

Our goals for this track are for participants to leave with a) a course syllabus draft that they will teach next school year and b) a network of colleagues they can learn from and share with as we move ahead together in this work.  This effort is part of a the Bonner Foundation's efforts to being social action to our network, which you can read about here.
