Mars Hill University Bonner Alum Lauren Sermersheim Joins ACHI as Health Policy Analyst

Lauren Sermersheim, a Bonner Scholar from Mars Hill University, is a great example of how Bonner students can leverage our Graduate School Partnership benefits to advance their public service journeys. Through Bonner’s partnership with the Clinton School of Public Service, Lauren was able to take advantage of graduate school support and opportunities that helped propel their next step—recently joining the Arkansas Center for Health Improvement as a Health Policy Analyst, turning complex research into clear, accessible insights for communities across the state.

Lauren Sermersheim, a May graduate of the Clinton School of Public Service, has joined the Arkansas Center for Health Improvement (ACHI) as a Health Policy Analyst.

ACHI is a nonpartisan, independent health policy center. In her new role, Sermersheim turns complex research into clear, accessible insights for everyday Arkansans. Her duties include monitoring legislative updates, tracking emerging health trends, and creating educational resources like flyers, infographics, and blogs. These materials are designed to help individuals and families make informed healthcare decisions.

“I spend a lot of my time writing about various health topics and identifying emerging issues, all with a lens of how this affects Arkansans,” Sermersheim said. “My job is really about making sure Arkansans have the information they need to understand how health policy touches their everyday lives.”

Bridging the gap between complex policy and public understanding was a central theme across Sermersheim’s graduate field service experiences at the Clinton School. Her projects included identifying school civic engagement needs for educational programing through the Clinton Foundation and evaluating Southern education funding models as a Walton Education Policy Fellow with the Arkansas Public School Resource Center.

“I realized I kept coming back to the same question: how do you take something that impacts large groups of people and actually translate it into something that is understandable for the people it impacts,” Sermersheim said.

Though her background was primarily in education, Sermersheim quickly found natural overlaps between education and health policy at ACHI, particularly in youth health programs and medical education. She credits Dean Victoria DeFrancesco Soto’s Policy Development course and a guest presentation from KFF CEO Drew Altman with sharpening her policy communication toolkit.

“Dean DeFrancesco Soto’s course helped directly prepare me for this position,” Sermersheim said. “I quickly learned how every word matters in policy work and how important it is to know and prioritize your audience and how to use facts and stories to illustrate important points. During my time in her class, we got to talk with Drew Altman, CEO of KFF, a national health policy organization. It was impactful to learn about the work they are doing throughout the country, and it was part of what launched my interest in getting involved in similar work at the state level.”
