Maryland Governor Appoints Llamilet Gutierrez, Dickinson ‘09 Bonner Leader, as County District Court Judge

Llamilet Gutierrez was one of the keynote speakers at the 2022 Summer Leadership Institute held at The College of New Jersey.

Llamilet Gutierrez, 2009 Dickinson College Bonner Leader, was recently appointed as a judge to serve on Prince Georges County District Court by Governor Larry Hogan of Maryland.

Llamilet Gutierrez began her career as a prosecutor with the Prince George's County State's Attorney's Office in March 2021. Prior to joining the State's Attorney's Office, she served as the Executive Director of the Amara Legal Center from 2018-2021. At the Amara Legal Center, she was responsible for managing staff, overseeing office operations, and recruiting new hires. Before her tenure at the Amara Legal Center, Ms. Gutierrez worked as an Assistant Public Defender in Prince George's County.

In addition to her extensive professional experience, Ms. Gutierrez has also served in various judicial roles. She served as a Law Clerk to the Honorable Nicholas E. Rattal of the Circuit Court for Prince George's County from 2012-2013. Ms. Gutierrez attended Lewis & Clark Law School.

She was the first to learn English in our little familia.

First to start translating for our mami and papi for any English family documents and their cleaning and gardening services.

First to clean houses with our mami when she wasn’t in school.

First to apply and attend magnet programs at Audubon Middle School and James Monroe High School

First to be bused all the way to the valley to attend Monroes Law High school. Where she did speech and debate with Valeria Carranza.

She woke up at 5am all throughout her high school career to catch the school bus.

First to go to college across the country to Dickinson College on a The Posse Foundation scholarship.

First to graduate from college.

First in our fam to earn an advanced degree. Mi familia got to see her get her law degree from Lewis & Clark College.

First Attorney in our family. Served as a Public Defender, ED of @Amaralegalcenter, most recently a MD States attorney.

First one we call when anyone of us needs support.

Today she became the first Latina, daughter of immigrant parents (from Mexico and El Salvador) to be appointed to serve on princegeorgescounty district court by @Governor Larry Hogan.

So much pressure comes with being the first. Llami’s courage, grit, fierceness, hard work ethic, power, determination, passion and servant leadership is unmatched.

Y’all… she is our ancestors and parents wildest dreams! Our parents came to this country with the hope of building a better life for their familia… and wow THIS IS THEIR #LEGACY!

Proud is an understatement to what our familia feels right now. she has been a remarkable role model for me and our hermanas. I can’t wait for my baby girls and my nieces to witness her investitureget confirmed. She believed she could, so her Chingona self did!
