Title: Civic Engagement and Bonner Program Coordinator

Organizational Relationship: Civic Engagement Faculty Director and a dotted line report to the Assistant Provost for Research, Development, and Civic Engagement

The successful candidate will report to and collaborate closely with the Civic Engagement Faculty Director and a dotted line report to the Assistant Provost for Research, Development, and Civic Engagement to provide leadership and carry out the comprehensive vision for civic engagement at Wagner College. Specific responsibilities are visioning, planning, and implementing curricular and academic elements, including the coordination of the Bonner Program and other civic engagement programs for students.

Duties Include but are not limited to: 

  • Serving as the central staff member in the Center for Civic Engagement by facilitating programming that values socially responsible engagement and intellectual growth. Provide overall vision, leadership, and direction for the Bonner Program, including a service structure and service opportunities for non-Bonner students.

  • Work closely with the Assistant Provost and the Civic Engagement Faculty Director to contribute to the vision, mission, and implementation of community engagement across the College.

  • Grow the number of students participating in the Bonner program and community engagement activities.

  • Establish baseline assessment measures for the Bonner program.

  • Design, facilitate, and assess the educational model and structure for the Bonner Program, including weekly meetings that foster leadership, critical reflection, and other skills for the Bonner Leaders that align with the Bonner developmental model and a one-credit-hour seminar for each Bonner Leaders cohort each semester.

  • Provide ongoing mentoring and advising to Bonner Leaders, including a structured one-on-one meeting with each Leader at least once per semester. Similarly, meet with other civically engaged students as needed.

  • Track progress of Bonner Leaders' academic and program-related requirements

  • Plan and lead periodic service trips and retreats involving travel to other locations.

  • Monitor student completion of hours and other program requirements and convene the process for reviewing the status of students who are not meeting those requirements.

  • Recruit and select new Bonner Leaders working with a student selection committee and stakeholders in Admissions and Financial Aid.

  • Maintain relations with the Bonner Foundation, including completing reports and information requests from the College and Foundation and regularly participating in Bonner network conferences and activities.

  • Market and promote the Bonner Program and other community engagement opportunities via a robust web, social media, and print presence. Develop outreach and program materials to communicate with potential and current Bonner Leaders and program alumni.

  • Maintain, update, and market community engagement and the Bonner digital platforms.

  • Oversee and support community engagement student committees regarding event planning, budget monitoring, etc.

  • Supervise student workers and Bonner interns.

  • Develop and maintain relationships with community partners to foster strong connections that help build capacity for Wagner students and community partners.

  • Connect students with community and campus resources to encourage their engagement with Staten Island and the larger New York City community.

  • Develop community engagement programming (e.g., service-learning opportunities, community-based research opportunities, and alternative service breaks) available to all students.

  • Participate in other activities of the Center for Civic Engagement and the College as a whole.

  • Manage and maintain the GivePulse site.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • An undergraduate degree is required. A in higher education, nonprofit management, student affairs, or a related field is preferred.

  • A minimum of 2 years related professional experience working with students in community or civic engagement.

  • Ability to work independently.

  • Experience with program development and assessment is a plus.

  • Strong communication skills.

  • Must possess proficiency in MS Office Suite software programs.

  • Ability to work with a sense of urgency and adapt to change easily.

  • Must possess strong customer service skills.

  • Must possess strong organizational, interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.

  • The ability to prioritize workload is required.

  • Must be able to interact within a diverse community and ability to effectively work with a diverse group of stakeholders.
